Tithing in the Tenth
Wayman Chapel AME Church
2018 Tithing Campaign – June
Words from our Pastor
Proverbs 3:9-10 tells us, “Honor the Lord with your substance and with the first fruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will be bursting with new wine.” God, the giver of every good and perfect gift, deserves first consideration not last.
Secondly, I would remind you again of both the injunction, as well as the promise of Malachi 3: 10, “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of host; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.” When we bring the tithe we are invited to put God to the test. God has promised to open the windows of heaven and pour down such abundance upon us, which can come in more than financial ways, we will not have room enough to receive it.
God has promised abundance to tithers, can certainly give us enough resources to pay bills. I recognize that when we are holding bills we can see, we are sometimes challenged to trust God who we cannot see. The question of tithing in the face of other obligations boils down to how much we believe the word of God and whether or not we are willing to stand on the promises of God regarding the tithe.
I pray you would have faith enough to believe God’s promise of sufficiency and adequacy and be faithful to the tithe no matter what other financial obligations you may have. God has not brought you this far to leave you and neither is God slack concerning God’s promises. Besides, if you can’t trust God, whom can you trust?
